The Wall Street Journal Subscription or the cookies?

With the need to keep cutting back on expenditures it is hard to know where to look to make the next cuts. It seems that even the things that cost the least must also go through a benefit vs. cost analysis as it is so hard to know what really makes a difference.

Take the office coffee for example. If coffee has been provided free to staff, there will be some discontent if staff has to bring in their own or pay into a coffee fund. Some things are just necessary to keeping staff happy. Why cause upset and low morale over a cup of coffee?

On the other hand, if the company has provided free donuts and cookies, most people tend to acknowledge this as over and above the normal, so, they do not get too disgruntled when they have to start paying for the snack or having them canceled.

However, the Wall Street Journal subscription is a different matter. There are some things that a business just has to have and that is access to in-depth business news. When knowing what is going on with your competition can make the difference between a happy staff and a disgruntled staff, ditch the cookies but not the paper.
